No matter how long the slinky is, the bottom of the slinky will stay still (hover) until the top reaches it. Even if the slinky is over 1000 feet long.
My inner physics geek needs to know how this works
It ends up being conservation of momentum. The bottom of the slinky is still at rest when the top begins to move because the support was released. The motion hasn’t translated to the bottom of the slinky, and won’t until the top catches up to it.
